Mayor of Accra visits Daycare Center for kids of 'Kayayee'

The Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah on Friday paid a working visit to Miishe Daycare Centre located at Okaishie in the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra.

The daycare centre which is privately owned by Ms Georgina Omaboe, an eighteen (18)-year-old Ghanaian studying in the United States of America (USA), seeks to support female head potters popularly known as Kayayei by offering free education to their children to enable them to work with ease.

Mayor Sowah commended the founder of the centre for the initiative and pledged the Assembly's support to ensure effective growth and development of the children.

“Officers from the Ashiedu Keteke Sub metro had been visiting the facility occasionally, we will link up the centre with our Social Welfare Department in order for them to assist in its management because taking care of these children go beyond teaching. These are infants and vulnerable, we have to take care of them, mentor them and interact with them so they mature to the benefit of society. There are a lot of these head potters in the CBD and most of the time you see them carrying their babies at their back and at the same time carrying loads on their heads making it unsafe for the children, we must take them away from such hustle and bustle," he said.

“We will have to support them with teaching and learning materials as well as other items," he added.

The founder of the centre, Georgina Omaboe disclosed that the facility currently has thirty (30) children between the ages of one (1) to three (3) years old and operates between the hours of 8 am to 5 p.m.

She said the children are taught how to sing rhymes as well as recite and write alphabets adding that the language barrier had been a challenge when it comes to communicating since most of these children speak Dagbani.

Ms Georgina Omaboe called on all and sundry to support the centre in order to enable the children to get enrolled in public schools when they are matured for the primary one.

She disclosed that her motivation to establish the facility was as a result of the dangerous environment under which the parents of the children work and how they were handled.
