A plea for Sports Development in the Volta Region - Gbordzor Promise writes.
Wednesday, November 27, 2024
As a young sports journalist born and raised in the Volta Region, I'm compelled to speak out about the glaring neglect of sports development in my beloved homeland. Despite being endowed with an abundance of talent across various sports disciplines, our region's potential remains stifled by the lack of adequate infrastructure and support.
The likes of Isaac Vorsah, Stephen Ahorlu, and Isaac Dogbey have made us proud, but their success stories are mere exceptions to the rule. The harsh reality is that our region's sportsmen and women are denied the opportunity to reach their full potential due to the absence of well-equipped sports facilities. The scarcity of resources and investment has become a perennial curse, stifling the growth of sports in the Volta Region.
I'm left wondering if our leaders are truly committed to the development of sports in our region. Have we been forgotten in the national sports agenda? The fact that we've had sports ministers from our region, such as Pius Enam Hadzide and Clement Kofi Humado, yet still struggle with basic infrastructure, is a damning indictment of their tenure.
Our peaceful nature should not be misconstrued as complacency. It's time for us to demand more from our leaders and take a stand for our rights. We need to create a sense of urgency and advocate for the development of sports infrastructure in our region. The status quo is unacceptable, and we owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to fight for a better sports future.
As I pen this article on July 25, 2024, I'm reminded that we have multiple Division One League clubs and a Ghana Premier League team, yet our cries for help remain unanswered. What's the point of having talented players if we can't provide them with the platform to excel? It's time for change, and we must be the catalysts for that change."
