The final game of Week 3 in the Sapholda-sponsored Greater Accra Hockey League was a thriller, as GRA Men staged an impressive comeback to beat Army 3-2 on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium.
The Army came out firing, dominating early with swift attacking play, and took the lead in the first quarter through a well-rehearsed penalty corner. GRA attempted to fight back but fell further behind when a long shot that found the net was ruled out, leading instead to a penalty that Army converted to cushion their lead in the second quarter.
However, GRA pulled one back in the third quarter through a swift counterattack and began to regain control of the game with improved possession.
The final quarter delivered end-to-end action, and GRA struck again to level the score at 2-2.
With just minutes left on the clock, another counterattack caught the Army defense napping, allowing GRA to net a dramatic winner and claim all three points.
Earlier in the day, Police Men continued their strong form with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Reformers.
The law enforcers opened the scoring in the first quarter via a penalty corner, but the Prison warders leveled in the second quarter and squandered several clear chances that could have seen them up by 4-1.
Police missed a penalty of their own, sparking heated arguments after the ball failed to cross the line, but later sealed the win in the third quarter with a well-taken penalty stroke.
While the Police celebrated another triumph, Reformers are still in search of their first point.
In the penultimate match of the day, Legonknights Men had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Ark Men.
After conceding early in the first quarter, Legonknights equalized in the second and went on to dominate the game, creating numerous scoring chances.
However, they were unable to find the winner in a match they truly had within their grasp.
In the Masters category, Multi Stix snatched a narrow 1-0 win over Sapholda. Despite Sapholda dominating possession and creating better chances, a fourth-quarter penalty converted by Multi Stix was enough to separate the sides.
Sapholda’s inability to convert in the final third proved costly, as they left the pitch empty-handed.
Another Master's fixture saw Citizens edge Golden Sticks 2-1 in a thrilling contest. Golden Sticks took the lead in the first quarter, but their rhythm was broken in the third, as Citizens scored a stunning equalizer straight from kick-off.
A decisive goal in the final quarter secured Citizens their first win of the league after a 3-3 draw with Multi Stix in Week 1.
Amidst the day's senior clashes was a development match featuring young talents: Ark Ladies vs. Ark Girls. The Ladies scored once each in the second and third quarters to secure victory, while the Girls, though solid in midfield, struggled to make an impact up front.
More exciting action awaits fans and hockey lovers, with the ladies’ division set to take center stage on Saturday, May 24, 2025, again at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium.
