Police in Accra have arrested two persons for attempting to defraud a lady of GH¢ 12,000.00 under the pretext of renting an apartment to her.
The suspects, Mohammed Surah, 49, and Yaw Darko, 26, were picked up by the Police after a complaint was lodged against them at the Kwabenya Police station.
According to the Police, a lady reported that she saw a contact information about an apartment on Tonaton, an online retail outlet and contacted the person, Yaw Darko, who claimed to be an estate agent.
Yaw Darko together with Mohammed Suraj, who posed as the landlord, led her to East Legon and showed her an apartment which is being rented for GH¢ 1,000.00 per month for a two-year period.
The lady after negotiations gave a cheque of GH¢ 12,000.00 to the suspects to cash at the bank. The suspects presented the cheque to the bank but were told the bank could only transfer the said amount into their accounts. This made the suspects call the lady to inform her that they owed their banks and so they could not transfer the money into their accounts and therefore demanded physical cash.
The lady became suspicious and subsequently informed the Police which led to their arrest. The suspects, after Police interrogation, admitted to the offence and are currently in Police custody assisting in investigation.
The police continue to advice the public to stay alert always in order to avert some of these aged-long schemes of fraudsters.
People who have fallen victims to the modus of these suspects should kindly report to the Kwabenya police for further action.
