Bolgatanga: Presbyterian Church of Ghana opens psychiatric hospital.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, has dedicated and opened a 10-bed specialist psychiatric hospital in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
The hospital built by the Church is the first of its kind in the whole northern sector of the country. This means that the hospital will serve all the five northern regions of the country since the Tamale Teaching and Central hospitals only have a unit and department designated for mental health patients.
The project which was started in April 2022 and completed in September 2022 was funded by friends of Bawku, a benevolent group based in the Netherlands and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at the cost of €43,000.
The facility, which was inaugurated to coincide with this year’s World Mental Health Day celebration on Monday has two consulting rooms, male and female wards, nurses’ station, nurses changing room and rest rooms, washrooms and an office for the administrators, among others.
The facility is expected to provide services in adult psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, drug and alcohol detoxification, geriatric psychiatry and psychotherapy services.
Present at the ceremony were, Rev James Kwame Awuni, the Upper Presbytery Chairperson of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Dr Dennis Daliri, in-charge of the hospital, Deputy Director in charge of administration at the Upper East Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service, Pascal Dongzuing and Hon. Rex Asanga, the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive Officer.
The rest include the President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, Mrs. Rebecca Teiko Sabah, Director for Development and Social Services of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Mr Sam Appiah, Health Coordinator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and Rev George Larbi, the Public Relations Officer of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.
